Many parts of West Waterford have remained unspoilt by the advances of the Twentieth Century and “An Seanachaí” Bar and Restaurant located in Dungarvan in County Waterford is a perfect illustration of this phenomenon. Nestling snugly in the Drum Hills just off the main Waterford / Cork Road (N25) between Dungarvan and Youghal, remains one of the great traditional Irish Pubs and eating houses. An Seanachaí began its life as an early 19th Century farmhouse to which a room was added in 1847. For 160 years imbibers have congregated at this lovely hilltop hostelry for a bit of craic, a pint of stout or a half one and have partaken in the delectable cuisine on offer.
After six lonely years of near dereliction, “An Seanachaí” Bar & Restaurant has been restored to its former glory by new proprietors Johnnie & Mags Hurley. Re-awaking the sleeping giant, Johnnie and Mags have maintained the old world charm with a tastefully modern twist throughout the premises. “An Seanachaí” boasts of traditional thatched roofs, hand cut stone flags and traditional old furnishings abound throughout the premises. The self styled country kitchen restaurant seats over 80 people
"We took over “An Seanachaí” in September 2004 and began its resurrection and renovation. Although this building had been closed for six years and was near dereliction when we acquired it, its heart continued to beat under the old thatch. It has been an enormous task completely re-thatching and resurrecting, giving the life back to this beautiful old building, which has pieces of our history and heritage indelibly stamped on it. We have tried to maintain this historical and heritage link in our décor combining the old with the new and bringing in all aspects of the locality. On entering “An Seanachaí” its warmth and old world charm envelopes you, giving you that nostalgic feeling - of not wanting to leave."
